Bayawan District Hospital is a 50-bed Secondary Capacity Government Hospital, Licensed by the Department of Health of the Philippine Government, Member of the Philippine Hospital Association and Accredited by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation.
The hospital was established based on a bill passed in May 2, 1967 in the Former House of Representative sponsored by the then Cong. Lamberto L. Macias (N) of the Second District of Negros Oriental. Funding for the building construction (PhP120,000) was appropriated in the approved Public Works Act and in 1968 the Enabling Act of Congress.
The hospital operation started in June 10, 1968 by the DOH National Government as a 15-Bed Bayawan Emergency Hospital with an Operating Budget of PhP40,000. Dr. Teofila S. Gamo organized the hospital and became the first Chief of Hospital.
The hospital was devolved from the National Government to the Provincial LGU of Negros Oriental in 1991 pursuant to Local Government Code of 1991 or Philippine Republic Act 5975.
The hospital is the convergent zone of the District Health System called the Sta. BayaBas Inter-Local Health Zone which was established based on the Memorandum of Agreement signed November 29, 1999 between the Province, the National Government and the 3 Local Government Units of Sta. Catalina, Bayawan City and Basay.
